Sisters

How come I'm blessed with such nice girls? As I lay in bed this morning, I listened to them make sweet little noises as they woke up. Eventually Maggie called out "Mama" and the day had begun. Now, I don't always wake up to sweet sounds, but I have to say I do more often than not. I love these two special girls with their easy-going personalities. They really do make life sweet.

Maggie seems to really love being a big sister. She loves to fetch me "monkey diapers" saying "oo-ah-ah." (We differentiate between Maggie's and Kate's diapers because Maggie's have "Ninnie" (Minnie) on them and Kate's have monkeys on them.) She also loves to rock Kate in the bouncer or her carseat to help her calm down and participates in Kate's tummy time laying side-by-side her sister. Maggie loves to use a sweet, high voice with Kate saying "Hi, hi" to her sister just like her mom does. She also still LOVES to kiss Kate on the head with a loud "mmmah" and now says "aww" after she does it because she was used to us all making that sound, saying how cute she was. I think she will really enjoy sharing a room with Kate. We are making the switch this weekend.

I am so glad that my girls have each other. I love my own sisters (and sisters-in-law). There is such a special bond that sisters can share with each other. It is fun to watch Maggie and Kate already starting to build that. That is to say, at least Maggie is trying. And Kate is not resisting...most of the time. :)

WE LOVE THIS PAIR OF SISTERS!!!

Two Months Old

Well, here's my chance to blog. Kate is sleeping and Maggie is in her crib recovering from a sugar rush (they had a Valentine's party at her library story time) by making Indian war calls (you know, yelling "ohhh" while tapping her mouth with her hand) as she settles down for her nap.

How does it go so fast?! I can't believe my sweet baby Kate is already a two-month-old. Two months ago, I was holding her in my arms for the first time. Here she is today, more alert, a stronger neck, a few more pounds, but the same sweet personality:

Kate really is a blessing. She fits right into the groove here at the Gotfredson residence. She is adored by Maggie and endures well the vigorous rocking and enthusiastic hugs and kisses she receives from big sister. She is still a good little eater and sleeper. She sleeps from about nine or ten at night to seven or so in the morning and will still take a good four-hour-long nap sometime midday in addition to some scattered catnaps. (If I time it right, this means I can even get a nap while she and Maggie sleep.) We can only hope her love for slumber will continue. She has several pleasant alert spells throughout the day and will coo and give big smiles during these times of the day. She also likes to stare intently around, with a focused, intelligent expression, like she is thinking very hard about something. I love her cute little face. She seems increasingly interested in her hands and recently learned to get her fist to her mouth. She is a patient baby and loves bouncing in her bouncer while I make dinner or tend to Maggie. But little Kate won't wait forever. When she has had it, she has had it and will give a wail to let me know. But even then, after she gives a couple good informative cries, she seems to let up to give me a chance to get to her. Her cries are so cute too, they still have that newborn edge to them. I love them. Her fussy time, when she has one, is predictably at dinner time. But what can you do? I feel by that point she has earned the right to be a little fussy and she is never unconsolable. She seems rather strong for such a little one and has been holding up her head for quite a while now, I think since about two weeks. She can also now pick up her head when on her tummy, which I find rather amazing since she also holds her arms off the ground or is flailing them around at the same time. She neither loves nor hates tummy time, unlike Maggie who definitely hated it and would cry or give up and put her head hopelessly on it's side on the ground. (I think tummy time was the only thing Maggie really hated as a baby until we hit baby cereal. She was such a complacent little thing.)

People ask me all the time if it's hard having two under two. It definitely is, sometimes more than others, but it's so much fun with the two I have. I really think Maggie and Kate make it as easy as they possibly can. (And now that I've said this, they are both going to transform overnight into complete hooligans.)

Okay, I'm done bragging. Here are a few more pictures of our sweet little Kate this past month:

Also, if you care to read Kate's one-month-post, I got around to posting it and you can read it here. I finally brought myself to finish retyping it after Maggie accidentally wiped out most of it with the unfortunate push of a button a while back. It's rather long and mostly about her birth, but you might want to see her cute pictures.

Kate's Blessing

Admist the chaos between Christmas and New Year's, we had our little Katie-girl blessed. Church was actually canceled the day we had planned to have the blessing due to snow and road conditions, but since all my family was in town from out East and we felt it would be nice to have them there if we could, the bishop kindly allowed us to do it in his office. So admist the snow and ice, Mike's parents and several of his brothers met us at the church and Kate was given a name and a blessing by her father on Sunday, December 27th, 2009, one day before her parents third wedding anniversary. And now she has a story to tell!

And if you were wondering...no, Kate's bow did not make it through the whole day. Maggie made sure it came off. That's why she is struggling in her Grandma's arms in the picture above. She just wanted to touch it soooo badly!

By the way, the Christmas skirt I'm wearing was a Christmas gift from Mike and Maggie...and an online purchase at that! Don't they have great taste? I'm told they wouldn't believe how many skirts they looked at.

A Word About the Holidays...

FUN!

For all you who are wondering, yes we had a white Christmas and it is still white around here. In fact, it has been extremely cold the past couple weeks and we have gotten even more snow. For the first time in the last three weeks we had church today!

With a new baby, Christmas preparations and celebrations, and visitors in town, blogging has not been at the top of my priority, however, we have had a lot of fun. Here are the highlights:

1. Christmas party with Mike's family and his brother's in-laws (forgot camera of course! sad!)--Robert and Lisa know how to throw a party. The refreshments were delicious and we had fun visiting and enjoying some Christmas stories, poems, and music.

2. A quiet Christmas at for us--The girls got matching pajamas on Christmas Eve. Then Christmas morning, Maggie was quite pleased to find treats and gifts under the tree and in her stocking. She was much more excited about the presents this year as compared to last year when she was more interested in the paper and bows. She was really cute about wanted to play with each gift for a few minutes before opening anything else. It was such a nice relaxing morning. It was so relaxing that little Kate slept her way through most of her first Christmas! Then we went to Mike's parents for Christmas dinner and hung out with them and his brother. We had a brief bit of excitement when we got stuck in the snow for about fifteen minutes at an intersection only about a mile from their house, but we were helped by several nice people who stopped including a truck with shovel and plow.

3. A visit from my family--They all came on the 26th and we got to celebrate and open presents with them too! We enjoyed the rest of the week and New Year's with all but my dad who just came out for Kate's blessing and then had to leave. We fit in some good ole Kansas BBQ, a trip to Kansas City, a shopping trip, a gingerbread building session, and finally rang in the New Year!! As usual, it was hard to see them go.

Kate's Story

Kate, 3-1/2 weeks

(The following is rather lengthy and is mainly for our own memory, however, if you want to read, go right ahead. Otherwise, scroll to the bottom of the post for another cute picture of Kate.)

Our precious little Kate just keeps growing. The past month has just flown by.

As Mike alluded to in his post about her birth, Kate did come quickly. I thought I was having some Braxton-Hicks the evening before and went to sleep praying they would turn into something more, but as I had already had so many similar episodes, I wasn't counting on it. The night before Kate was born, I woke up a couple times with a backache, and Mike asked me if my contractions were close together, to which I replied I didn't think I had anything to time.

By about 4:30am I couldn't sleep anymore and decided to go into the living room to see if I was having timable contractions. To my surprise and growing excitement, my contractions were indeed timable and growing closer together. They seemed to be about ten minutes apart to start and by about 5:00am had gotten down to six or seven minutes apart and definitely more and more painful. However, as they were still not completely regular, I was hesitant to call anyone. They were strong enough though that at about 5:30am I decided maybe I better call Mike's parents, as they live an hour from us and Maggie's Grandma Gotfredson was planning to come over to watch Maggie while we went to the hospital. I told them I wasn't positive it was the real thing, but maybe they should come and I would call the doctor. I then called the emergency hotline for my doctor's office and was rather annoyed to have to listen to an automated voice message system during a particularly painful contraction. But I left my message saying that I was pretty sure I was in labor and that I was planning to go to the hospital in a little while.

At first we planned to wait until Mike's parents arrived to leave, but as my contractions were getting ever stronger and more painful (though still not completely regular--they were still four or five minutes apart with a seven minute gap every now and then) and the hospital was at least thirty-five to forty minutes away, we decided to call our kind neighbor, Iris, to sit with Maggie until Mike's parents arrived. She got to our house a little after six. About the same time, we got a call from my midwife telling me to definitely head to the hospital and that she would probably deliver me if I really was in labor, but wanted to know my second choice doctor if she couldn't get there. We also got a call from Mike's parents, telling us they were just leaving and the roads were rather snowy up by them. I was glad we were already leaving.

We jumped in the car and before we were even out of the driveway I had my most painful contraction yet and started dry heaving. I was almost afraid that we had waited too long to leave and as we passed the local hospital, I wondered if we should just head for the emergency room there, but Mike thought we could get to our hospital, where they had a maternity ward. Luckily, Mike remained calm the whole drive, whereas I alternately worried that we wouldn't make it and worried that I was just being a baby and was still only in the very early stages of labor (after all, Maggie was a thirty-four hour ordeal). We were also blessed in that none of the roads we needed were much slower than normal with the snow, but were significantly slower going the other directions. Another thing that saved me was that my contractions were still close to five minutes apart, so I figured I wouldn't have to endure more than about ten before we got to the hospital. I passed the car ride by counting them down.

Still, I never felt such sweet relief as when I saw the hospital from the highway. (Well, except for the moments after Maggie and Kate were born.) We pulled up to the front door a few minutes after seven and I hurried in while Mike parked the car. A nurse helped us up to the maternity ward and checked me right away. The rest of my fears of not really being in labor dissippated as she announced I was at a nine and told me not to push. She quickly got the midwife on the phone and told her to hurry over.

I spent the next fifteen minutes or so being poked with those awful IV needles while the nurses kept asking me questions, telling me I was doing great, and calling me a rockstar (whatever that means); I tried to answer correctly and not say "ow" too loud and make the nurses feel bad. I also finally asked how you are supposed to relax through contractions and also not push, when the only way I could not push was to be tense, and found out I didn't have to relax anymore. Finally the midwife walked in, told them I didn't have to have an IV since they hadn't gotten it in in four tries, and told me I could push whenever I wanted. Ten minutes and several pushes later, I heard Kate's first cry, then saw her beautiful face. She was perfect and has remained perfect ever since.

We spent the next day and a half in the hospital, where the room service was plentiful and excellent (especially the fresh fruit and chocolate cake) and the nurses were kind as could be and went home to meet Maggie the following night. At first Maggie wasn't completely sure what to do with Kate, but quickly found out that kissing her on the top of the head with a loud "mmmmah" was rather fun and has kept it up ever since.

Since her rather exciting entrance into the world, Kate has been a very peaceful little newborn. She has an incredibly sweet little disposition. Her likes include eating, sleeping, staring, being carried and chilling in her bouncer. Her dislikes are being cold, being strapped into her carseat (though once in, she is quite happy there), being hungry, or being messy or more generally being uncomfortable. She is such a sweet little sleeper. She's been sleeping through the night in six to seven hour stretches since a few days after we brought her home and makes the cutest little grunting sound as she is waking up, so I awake to that rather than crying, which I prefer. I caught her smiling and giggling in her sleep the day after we got home from the hospital and it seems she smiles more every week. Now she even smiles when she is awake!

We all love little Kate and are so glad she is ours!! We feel so blessed that both she and I have been so healthy and hope to remain so. Happy one month, baby girl!!!
